Top Rated: Pinot Gris/Grigio

By The Tasting Team

We are pleased to announce, at long last, a stand-alone category for pinot gris and pinot grigio. Mayer Bloody Hill PG is a very fine inaugural winner, with Bleasdale and Yabby Lake both going close to claiming the chocolates. Pinot gris/grigio wines make up around 10 per cent of all the white wines tasted for this guide, outnumbering both sauvignon blanc and semillon. It’s a significant variety with, in the best examples, the quality (and texture) to match.

A fresh and appealing pinot gris. This has some nashi pear and grapefruit pith with a hint of apricot kernel. Unlike a lot of Australian gris that's often a touch too sweet and simple for my taste, this delivers the goods. On the palate, you'll find white nectarine, some pickled ginger and, equally importantly, a touch of grip giving the wine shape and structure. A no-brainer for spicy Thai food and the like. – Philip Rich
