For many wine lovers, the phrase 'non-alcoholic wine' is enough to prompt a raised eyebrow. Yet as Dry July begins and more Australians choose to moderate their alcohol intake – whether for a month or simply on certain occasions – alcohol-removed wines have become an increasingly visible part of the conversation. Rather than replacing traditional wine, they're presenting an alternative for moments when drinking alcohol isn't the preference, while attempting to preserve as much of the wine experience as possible.
Australian brand Edenvale has been part of that conversation since long before mindful drinking entered the mainstream. Founded in 2006, the producer was built on the belief that "people who choose not to drink alcohol shouldn't have to compromise on the experience of enjoying wine". While the category was still in its infancy, the team recognised "there was a growing number of people looking for a genuine wine alternative for occasions when alcohol wasn't appropriate".
Edenvale's alcohol-removed wines present an alternative that broadens participation in wine culture, whether that's sharing meals or celebrating milestones.
According to Edenvale, today's consumers are approaching the category differently. "They're not simply looking for an alcohol-free beverage; they're looking for a wine that still expresses varietal character and retains the qualities that have long made wine central to hospitality, food and shared experiences."
Central to that philosophy is Edenvale's insistence that the process begins with wine itself. "We ferment real grapes using traditional winemaking techniques, allowing the wine to develop the structure, aroma and varietal character you'd expect. Only then is the alcohol gently removed using our proprietary vacuum distillation technology."
For Edenvale, the appeal of alcohol-removed wine extends beyond what's in the glass. "It's about slowing down, sharing meals, celebrating milestones and connecting with people and places." Whether opening a bottle with dinner, enjoying a glass while cooking or raising a toast with friends, the producer believes "the ritual remains".
With that in mind, we've selected eight of Edenvale's alcohol-removed wines to discover how the producer is interpreting familiar styles for a growing audience seeking greater flexibility, without leaving wine entirely behind.
