2023 Varietal Winners

Top Rated: Sweet

By The Tasting Team

Great sweet wines are sadly scarce in Australia, so much so that this category suffered a brief hiatus last year. We’re proud to reinstate it this year, with six highlights that exemplify a wide diversity of styles, from late harvest riesling, to dried trebbiano, even flor yeast maturation. Sweetness can play a vital role in white wines, especially in cool, acid-driven vintages like 2021. Riesling rightfully dominates this class and takes top honours in Brown Brothers luscious and decadent Noble.

Year after year, this wine is incredibly consistent in style and quality. Deep golden hues with the scent of dried apricot, orange marmalade, cumquat, orange peel and dried fig. The palate is dense and sticky, beautifully balanced and textural and deliciously layered in concentrated citrus. Stunning! – Jeni Port
