The Canberra Distillery Old George Reserve Whisky
The Canberra Distillery hasn’t been making whisky for very long, and this product consequently displays a fair amount of youth. Raw oak and grain dominate the nose, with lots of underripe apple and freshly trimmed hedge greenness. But, impressively, there’s very little spirit harshness and plenty of floral jasmine tea as well. Pedro ximénez sherry barrels lend this whisky a gorgeous colour, but don’t provide much in the way of richness on the nose. Soft and sweet on the palate without being at all cloying and with plenty of oak and grain complexity, this spirit has been expertly diluted and there’s some nice PX character on the finish. All in all, a promising step on Canberra Distillery’s whisky journey, and a big improvement over whisky I tried from them last year. With maturation, it will really hit its stride.
