The Canberra Distillery Blood Orange Gin
Leaning into the prettier aspects of blood orange, the nose on this gin gives subtle but intriguing notes of orange blossom and soft green woody herbs. It feels very delicate and deliberate, and plays rather than being robust and boastful, presents a little more demure. The blood orange holds to the front of the palate but drops into a more guiding flavour for the rest of the gin, brightening the front palate before offering its subtle sweetness throughout. Citrus gins find it challenging to gain subtlety, so observing one where the juniper and other botanicals still shine through is very welcome. Bottling at a slightly lower ABV allows these more gentle, less oily citrus notes to come through, but its sweetness still helps to hold the texture together.
