Our Review
Flametree is one of Margaret River’s most successful wineries and yet it owns no vineyards. It’s all about sourcing quality fruit, whether for the entry-level Embers or top-tier S.R.S. (Sub Regional Series). Cliff Royle, who joined in ’09 as chief winemaker, is savvy when it comes to fruit choice. He started the S.R.S. range – chardonnay from Wallcliffe and cabernet sauvignon from Wilyabrup – in ’10. There’s also a Karridale sauvignon blanc. How did he get there? 'Years of playing around with different parcels of fruit, grading them and being brutal.' Along the way, Flametree has picked up a raft of accolades. -JANE FAULKNER
