Cultivar Wines

Cultivar is the venture of industry veteran David Crawford and wife Meaghan, David with 25 years' experience across the entire Australian wine industry. The term ‘cultivar' is technically a more appropriate word than ‘variety' (according to Jancis Robinson), but is seldom used outside South Africa. For David, clones are in fact all-important, and, after a protracted search, he found a vineyard first planted in 1991 to clone PT23, with subsequent plantings of the well-known SA1654 clone and a mutated version of PT23, Mt Ida. David has leased the former Tarcoola Estate winery in conjunction with Bellbrae Estate, and this is where the Cultivar wines are made. -JAMES HALLIDAY
