Karatta Wines

South Australia | Robe

Our Review

David and Peg Woods named Karatta Wines after the heritage-listed Karatta House at Robe, built in 1858. In 2016 it was discovered that Peg’s family were part owners of the steamer SS Karatta, which plied the Southern Ocean between Robe, Kangaroo Island and Adelaide up to the mid-20th century. The original life buoy of the Karatta adorns the tasting room and is the inspiration for new branding, reflecting the maritime influence on the vines and wines. Karatta has 2 vineyards: 12 Mile and Tenison; 12 Mile is less than 10km from the Southern Ocean, the temperature 10–15°C cooler than Coonawarra. Winery and vineyard tours can be arranged by contacting Charles Lawrence 0487 357 254. Exports to the US and Japan. -JAMES HALLIDAY
