South Australia | Barossa Valley

Our Review

The founding Ashmead family, with mother Lorraine supported by sons Allister and Cameron, continues to impress with their wines. Julie Ashmead (married to Cameron), 5th-generation winemaker at Campbells in Rutherglen, is head of production, overseeing viticulture and winemaking. Elderton has 3 vineyards. Two are in the Barossa Valley – Nuriootpa (Elderton's original estate vineyard, with plantings dating back to 1894, with shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot) and Greenock (originally planted by the Helbig family in 1915, purchased in 2010, consisting of shiraz, grenache, carignan, mourvèdre, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and semillon). The 3rd is the Craneford Vineyard in the Eden Valley (planted to shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, riesling and chardonnay). Energetic promotion and marketing in Australia and overseas are paying dividends. Elegance and balance are the keys to these wines.

Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley.

The Elderton vineyard which was planted in 1894 by the Scholz Family, was purchased by the Ashmead family in 1980 and started producing labelled bottled estate wine from the 1982 harvest. It was well after a decade of hard work and toil that the winery shot to prominence in the early 1990s, after winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1993 Melbourne Wine Show.

The real strength behind the Elderton success is the ancient 72 acre Barossa floor vineyard, which produces fruit of the highest quality year in year out. Each block on the property is cherished but the two standouts are the Command Shiraz block, planted 1894, and the Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon block, planted 1944.

The wines of Elderton are enjoyed worldwide for their amazing varietal characters and regional definition. Elderton pride themselves on quality, consistency and sustainability.

Shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, grenache, mourvedre, carignan, riesling, chardonnay, semillon.

Our Cellar Door is the grand 1918 classic gentleman’s bungalow Neil and Lorraine Ashmead bought for their family home, to live a Barossa lifestyle. Surrounded by Elderton’s iconic vineyards, the homestead is now home to our Cellar Door. Scroll down to see the photo gallery of this Barossa Valley wine tasting gem. The beautiful building provides great spaces to give you the experience you desire – from a casual tasting at the bar which looks out over our 1894 Command Vineyard, to an in-depth hosted tasting in one of our private tasting rooms. For those who would like a more in-depth tasting, check out our tasting experiences.

If you desire a relaxed afternoon, our wines are also available by the glass and can be accompanied by a great local produce plate. Look out over the 1894 Command vineyard from the verandah, enjoy the sunshine on the lawn or during winter sit by the open fire. If wine isn’t all you dream about, then let us tempt you with our espresso bar, with our favourite Barossa Coffee Roasters coffee.
