Our Review
Dog Point was founded in ’04 in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys by Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy. Ivan and James had met several years prior while working at Cloudy Bay and decided in vintage ’02 to make a wine and build a business together. The vineyard, which sits at the confluence of the Brancott and Omaka valleys and is the largest in New Zealand to be certified organic, is planted to sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir, with the oldest vines nudging 40 years old. The range includes three varietal wines plus a fumé-style sauvignon blanc called Section 94 which comes from a single parcel and spends 18 months in French oak. As well as vineyard tours and cellar door (Wine Shed) tastings, visitors can stay on-site in a two-bedroom, self-contained villa called the French Barn. -ANNA WEBSTER
