Quartz Reef, as a name, references the largest quartz deposit in New Zealand, which sits underneath the vineyard site at this estate. It's a nice token for the winery, which established the first vines (now 15ha) of the sub-region Bendigo in '98. Adjacent to these estate plantings are an additional 15ha planted to pinot noir and chardonnay for the méthode traditionnelle sparkling program. The entire estate is certified biodynamic. Wines are released at an estate level and under the 'Single Ferment' and 'Royal Series' tiers – the quality is unspeakably good. -KATRINA BUTLER
