You have to wonder whether the Chinese obsession with red wines has been the reason why production of high quality red wines has soared while that of white wines has been becalmed. It certainly has nothing to do with the quality of the wines, nor their value for money, even if riesling, semillon and marsanne deserve far wider interest. It is these two that have thrown off the shackles of cork, opening up guaranteed 20-30-year life spans for the better examples. Chardonnay, too, has been given a longer future, even if it doesn’t transform itself in quite the same way as the fragrant unwooded wines.
