Australian sparkling is coming of age, and increasingly receiving global recognition. The sparkling epicentre of Tasmania again takes the lead in our list of superstars, with a line-up of splendour spanning three decades that dominates almost 40% of our shortlist. The cool mainland zones of Adelaide Hills and King Valley each mount a noble challenge, and one of the finest sparkling wines ever to emerge from the Adelaide Hills pipped Tasmania at the post for the top gong. Champagne, look out!

The diversity of the balance of our list is exciting and promising in equal measure, with Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia putting forward 10 contenders from seven regions. Even prosecco has fought its way to the top this year – not once, but thrice!

Think of something to celebrate fast, because when you open this beauty of a sparkling, you'll feel like toasting something – anything! Keeps a constant cool-climate beat: brisk in acidity, fast in bubble and superb in yeast complexity and depth of flavour. Florals, citrus, melon, stone fruits and pastry aromas. Very fine, zippy acidity holds down a full spectrum of fruit and yeast-derived nutty flavour. Finishes clean, fresh and oh-so elegant. – Jeni Port
