Australian sparkling is coming of age, and increasingly receiving global recognition. The sparkling epicentre of Tasmania again takes the lead in our list of superstars, with a line-up of splendour spanning three decades that dominates almost 40% of our shortlist. The cool mainland zones of Adelaide Hills and King Valley each mount a noble challenge, and one of the finest sparkling wines ever to emerge from the Adelaide Hills pipped Tasmania at the post for the top gong. Champagne, look out!

The diversity of the balance of our list is exciting and promising in equal measure, with Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia putting forward 10 contenders from seven regions. Even prosecco has fought its way to the top this year – not once, but thrice!

Twelve years on lees brings complexity to the wine. Very toasty scents laced with sea spray, dried apple, fig, cinnamon and nougat. The palate is set similarly with characters of more toast and cinnamon with licks of honey in the mix, yet a piercing line of saline acidity makes its mark, too. Creamy mouthfeel on top of that and a salted nut finish lingers. Quite a profound wine on hand. – Mike Bennie
