The Gospel Whiskey Projects Series Rye Malt Whisky
This special edition Gospel is made from 100% malted rye from the Riverina region of NSW. The Gospel's usual whiskies are made from unmalted rye, which has a spicier, grassier flavour, while malted rye tends to be richer and sweeter. It also has the distinction of being matured in an Australian chardonnay cask, markedly different from the virgin American oak casks that The Gospel usually employs. On the nose, this whisky is sweeter and less oaky than the Straight Rye, really a different beast, offering waves of vanilla confection, burnt toffee, orange blossom, and wool. At 54%, the booze is super well controlled without any volatility - it's all pillowy sweetness. Grain and oak make themself known on the palate, but it's not as giving as the nose would imply. The finish of black liquorice is nice too.
