Callington Mill Invicta Single Malt Whisky
Callington Mill Invicta is the core range release, matured in Portuguese Port casks. Unlike most Australian whiskies of this style that use local ex-tawny casks, Callington spends the big bucks to get the European stuff, similar to what would be used in Scotland. At under $150/bottle, a single malt whisky matured exclusively in port casks is a bargain in my book, from either Scotland or Australia, or anywhere else. There’s a bit of the rich sweetness you’d expect from a port cask whisky on the nose here, along with well-aged balsamic and black olive notes, but there’s also a musty, wet cardboard note. The palate is easygoing and light with a nice oaky grip, and while it finishes short, it's a very easy whisky to drink.
