Callington Mill Enigma Single Malt Whisky
Callington Mill’s flagship single malt whisky is part of a new wave of Australian single malts produced by large distilleries and retailed reasonably competitively with Scottish imports. Matured in a combination of Spanish sherry and Portuguese port casks, this whisky should be on the radar of anyone who likes a good sherry-forward Scotch, with plenty of rich oak and fortified wine character immediately apparent on the nose. The spirit itself is still somewhat youthful and raw but, for the price point, it performs well and is certainly ahead of many examples from both Scotland and Australia. At 40%, it’s lacking some texture while also being a bit hot through the finish for such a low ABV. In all, a good value whisky that’s not unpleasant to drink, just a little disjointed.
