Eureka Distilling Australian Subourbon American Style Whiskey
There are precious few bourbon-style whiskies produced in Australia. It’s a hard road when we’re not allowed to call it 'bourbon' even if we make it exactly the same way. 'American-style Australian corn whisky' just doesn’t have the same ring to it. So good on Eureka Distilling for giving it a crack with their 'Subourbon' American style whiskey (spelled with an 'e' as the Yanks do), distilled from a combination of corn and barley, and aged for three years in virgin American oak casks for that intense oakiness bourbon drinkers love. There’s plenty going on in the glass here, with lots of dense, musty oak and chewy, fermented fruit sweetness on the nose. A brown banana skin note does come through as pretty dominant. The spirit is clean and bright, with a nice herbal grip through the palate, and I can definitely see potential here.
