A lot of people find wine intimidating. It’s too snobby, they say. Too highbrow. The terminology is foreign and tasting notes may as well be written in Latin for all the sense they make. And is all that swirling and sniffing really necessary?

It’s a shame that what is essentially fermented grape juice, designed for nothing more than enjoyment, can strike such fear into the hearts of would-be wine lovers. Luckily, a good local bottle shop is the perfect antidote.

Since the very first store opened in Portside in 2017, Sense of Taste has been serving, guiding and empowering its growing community of drinkers. Today, with seven stores across Brisbane, plus another online, Sense of Taste has evolved into one of the city’s leading boutique retailers, and the premier destination for wine beginners and connoisseurs alike.

While approachable and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to offer advice, its range of premium Australian and international wines, craft beers, and rare and exceptional spirits has been so thoughtfully and expertly curated that even the most novice drinker can pick a bottle off the shelf and be guaranteed a good time. Although, the score cards and personalised staff recommendations available in-store to help navigate the impressive selection mean choices need not be random.

Beyond its remarkable range, Sense of Taste offers unique in-store experiences aimed to both educate and nurture its customers’ love of wine. Regular in-store tastings, hosted either by staff or by the importers or winemakers themselves, provide an opportunity to try new styles, varieties or producers. For the real enthusiasts, there are masterclasses and even varietal dinners, which allow customers to really drill down into not just the what but the why.

For Sense of Taste's Rodney Hunter, connecting customers with the stories behind each product has always been the driving force behind his business. “My vision has always been to bring together enthusiasts who appreciate great products and the stories that make them special,” he says. “Sense of Taste continues to thrive as a destination for quality, community, and learning.”
