Try these 11 wines made from alternative varieties, including savagnin, mencia, arneis and more. With both reds and whites in this list, we're sure you'll find something to enjoy.

With over 10,000 grape varieties in the world, the journey of discovering new wines is endless. You've probably tried the vast majority, if not all, of the most popular grape varieties – including shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc – but you may not have encountered the 11 alternative varieties below.

Take savagnin for instance. Mostly planted in the Jura region of France, savagnin is a white grape variety that came to Australia almost by accident, having being mistaken for albariño. Other whites grape varieties below include trebbiano, aligoté and the increasingly popular, arneis.

When it comes to red grapes, try the tannat (the national grape of Uruguay), the Iberian mencía, or the sagrantino, which hails from Central Italy. Start your journey of discovery with these 11 wines.
