Tasmania's Tolpuddle Vineyard has released its premium chardonnay and pinot noir wines from the 2022 vintage.
The Tolpuddle Vineyard sits in the cool climate region of the Coal River Valley in Tasmania, and was planted solely to chardonnay and pinot noir 35 years ago. The 2022 vintage was the coldest the Tolpuddle team has experienced since the vineyard was acquired by founders and owners Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW (Shaw + Smith) in 2011.
The winemaking at Tolpuddle is led by Adam Wadewitz and the vineyard is managed by Murray Leake, Carlos Souris and Wendy Borg. To give you an idea of the quality of the wine, every vintage of Tolpuddle chardonnay and pinot noir submitted to Halliday Wine Companion has been scored either outstanding or exceptional. And the 2022 vintage is no exception. Tasting Team member Dave Brookes has scored the 2022 Tolpuddle Chardonnay 98 points and the 2022 Tolpuddle Pinot Noir 96 points.
2022 Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay Tasmania
Another alluring Coal River chardonnay release from the folks at Tolpuddle. It's at once full and concentrated but is reined in by a tight framework of acidity, coiling on rails of minerality before powering across the palate. Tension and detail on point, light textural phenolic elements give it a sleek and silken mouthfeel. The fruit tones of white peach, nectarine and citrus are cloaked in soft spice, white floral tones, struck match, almond paste and crushed stone and the wine displays a stony elegance and seriousness on the long finish. If we were to talk in hushed tones about what would constitute a Tasmanian Grand Cru chardonnay, the Tolpuddle would be the front-runner. 2022 Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir Tasmania
Tolpuddle has firmly cemented its position at the pointy end of the Tasmanian pinot noir pyramid, consistently producing knockout wines that have become a benchmark for the region. Nothing changes with the 2022 release, which shows wonderful fruit intensity and oodles of pinosity in a graceful package. Lovely pure dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits, cut with exotic spice, charcuterie, roasting game, shiitake broth, amaro herbs, purple floral tones and complex forest floor notes. Textural and elegant yet with an undercurrent of latent power and intensity, a tight tannin frame and a long finish that shows balance and poise.
