Takeaway: top tastes from restaurants and bars in your city

By Haydn Spurrell

Whether or not you find yourself stuck at home, there’s no better time than now to indulge in some of what your city has to offer from the comfort of your home.

With Australians again struck by Covid-19 restrictions to varying degrees, it remains as good a time as any to throw your support in for local businesses that are thinking outside the box to offer stay-at-home incentives.

See below for just some of what our cities are doing during the latest lockdowns.

Apoteca Bar & Restaurant, Adelaide, SA

Adelaide’s west end precinct Apoteca Bar and Restaurant has been celebrating post-lockdown – and, perhaps, commiserating the fatigue that comes after – with a Post Lockdown 3.0 Hamper. The hamper has sizing options for two people or four, and includes a choice of two starters, two mouth-watering mains, and the same for dessert. While final order cut off is July 30 for a Saturday night meal, keep an eye out if you’re in the area in case they continue into the following weekend. Check out some of their other online options to add wine and champagne.

Karma and Crow, Richmond, SA

An impressive list of 2019 and 2020 vintages, from white wines to reds and everything in between, isn’t all that Karma and Crow are delivering through the online period. The warehouse-turned-café is devoted to championing ethical produce and building community. While this is a challenging goal at the moment, Karma and Crow is selling various essentials and delicious supplements made locally. Check out the shop, or grab a gift card from the homepage.

Chicco Palms, Brooklyn Park, SA

Change things up with Chicco Palms, an Italian restaurant in Adelaide selling pizza and cocktail kits to get you and yours involved in your own kitchen. The menu offers Espresso martinis and vanilla gelato, Redberry freeze, Pina colada and, if you’re taking a night off from alcohol, Pink lady mocktails. The pizza kits come with homemade doughs, fresh sugo sauce and mozzarella – a perfect activity for two or more, with a delicious reward at the end of it.

Southside Restaurant, South Brisbane, QLD

South Brisbane’s Southside opened up its Houseside by Southside option during the state’s late June lockdown. The menu includes dumplings, woks and meats, and vegetables and sides, catering for dairy-free, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan diets. Locals can call, message, or pre order via the website link below for same-day pickup, with its neighbouring Kiki Bottle-O open with a selection of drinks perfect for pairing with your next East-asian meal.

Butcher & Vine, Hawthorn, VIC

Dedicated to pairing unrivalled food with top-tier wines, Butcher & Vine is a restaurant and wine bar with takeaway menus for food and drinks specifically designed to help us through our lockdown blues. The team’s impressive wine list is an assortment of sparkling, whites, rosés, reds, sweets and fortifieds – and it offers an array of sharing plates, burgers and delectable mains for an unrivalled date night or weekend in.

Byrdi, Melbourne, VIC

A bar where “the local environment informs the drinks”. Delivering straight to your door, Byrdi pours plenty of love, attention, and time into its cocktails, and is located conveniently on La Trobe Street. Whether you’re opting for a night in with a Byrdi Mixed Bag, a bottle of their rosé-styled vermouth crafted using local fruits such as Kakadu plum and mango, or one of its various uniquely flavoured spirits, Byrdi is an enticing at-home option.

The Ugly Duckling, Richmond, VIC

Richmond’s The Ugly Duckling cocktail and wine bar is offering its bottled cocktails for in-store pick up and same-day local delivery. Choose from an assortment of cocktails such as its Elderflower Southside, Smoked Pineapple Daiquiri, and Barrel-aged Chocolate Negroni. The bar is also selling a selection of premium local wines, including a chardonnay from Polperro, a shiraz from Mitchelton Estate and a pinot noir from Reece – with accompanying cheese grazing packs to sweeten the deal.

Wines of While, Perth, WA

Both a sit-in bar and a takeaway bottle shop, Wines of While celebrates chemical-free organic and natural wines with a selection of red and white wines hailing from some of the world’s most revered winemaking countries. From Italy to Georgia and, of course, our very own backyard, Wines of While’s immense wine list is backed by a range of perfectly-paired dishes from beans to pastas sourced from local farmers.

No 92, Sydney, NSW

While Sydney-siders can’t live it up at No. 92’s exquisite two-story wine bar, the team is selling food, wine and cocktails for delivery or pickup. But that’s not all – they’ve also launched a take-away pop-up Mexico Mi Amor to spice up your Saturday night, with margaritas for good measure. If Mexican isn’t your thing, No 92 creates dishes made from simple, fresh ingredients paired with a purposefully curated wine list featuring vintages from regions such as Hunter Valley and McLaren Vale, among many more

P&V Merchants, Newtown, NSW

With same-day delivery every day until the end of lockdown for Sydney residents, there’s even more reason to check out this tag-team of founders with an embarrassment of experience between the two, from venue management to wine journalism. The mission statement, a bottle shop for the neighbourhood, by the neighbourhood, promises a range of Australian and foreign beers and wines – going by their list, the duo more than delivers on that promise.

Re, Eveleigh, NSW

Re, the impressive sustainably waste-free bar in South Eveleigh, has re-envisioned itself as the Re-Up bar, offering an online service to have their assortment of bottled cocktails delivered to your door or picked up curb side if you’re within a nine kilometre radius, offered in bundles or individually, all made from salvaged ingredients. The bar offers beer and wine for those inclined, all for pick-up from Monday to Saturday.

Saké Restaurant & Bar, Double Bay, NSW

In lieu of travelling, there’s no better time to tuck into some signature Japanese sashimi or popcorn chicken. Double Bay’s hiramasa kingfish and popcorn shrimp are ready for pickup or delivery, along with its cocktails and sake. For a truly Japanese experience at home, you can pick up a bottle of Akishika Kobo or Toji. There are also wines from Opawa, Forest Hill Estate and St Hugo, and Asahi or 4 Pines beer: truly something for everyone.
