Penfolds will release its highly anticipated annual collection on August 3. The wines span four countries under one collection, and includes the 69th release of Grange.

The Penfolds Collection 2023 will be released globally on August 3. The Collection includes wines from four continents, with releases from Australia, America, France and China.

Chief winemaker Peter Gago says the Collection spans variety, vineyard, country and time. He says the Collection highlights the innovative spirit and enduring house style of Penfolds in a global context.

“The Penfolds Winemaking Team relishes the opportunity to work across two hemispheres and numerous time zones – with like-minded people and unique winemaking cultures – redefining what ‘pushing the boundaries’ now means."

Known for its experimental winemaking and trial wines (including Grange 1951, Yattarna Bin 144, and the Red Winemaking Trial 798 (RWT) Barossa Valley Shiraz), the brand's latest innovation has led Penfolds to China, with the launch of the Chinese Penfolds Winemaking Trial 521 Cabernet Sauvignon Marselan 2021.

The trial wine is a combination of cabernet sauvignon and marselan from Ningxia, a dry, premier wine growing region, in China. "Our winemaking focus on the ground is a demonstration of our continued commitment," says Peter.

Leading the Australian collection is the 2019 Grange, which marks the 69th consecutive release of the icon wine. Among the wines from Penfolds' Australian sites is the Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 – a reflection of an outstanding Coonawarra vintage – and the inaugural release of the Bin 21 Barossa Valley Grenache.

The French collection is led by the Penfolds partnership with Dourthe Bordeaux and includes the multi-vintage Penfolds II Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and the 2020 FWT 585 Cabernet Merlot Petit Verdot. Peter describes the second trial release of the FWT 585 as what Left-Bank Bordeaux does best when it comes to cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot.

The California quintet release includes the flagship Quantum 2019, Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, Bin 600 Cabernet Shiraz 2020, and the single-vineyard Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 from the revered Gamble Ranch vineyard.

"Each Penfolds Collection showcases a continuum of winemaking progression as we constantly and curiously look forward to what’s next. Only months from 2024, when we mark 180 years of Penfolds winemaking, there are a few blank pages ready to be filled with a few more surprises," says Peter. "Nothing stands still."
