For those who see the wineries of WA as suffering from the tyranny of distance, this most remote of all wineries shows there is no tyranny after all. It is a story of unqualified success due to sheer hard work, and no doubt to founders Merv and Judy Lange's aversion to borrowing a single dollar from the bank. The substantial production is entirely drawn from the estate vineyards – now over 100 ha. Wine quality across the range is impeccable, always with precisely defined varietal character. Winemaker Stephen Craig (appointed 2009) brings experience from three years at Tyrrell's, seven years at Goundrey, and vintages in Spain, France and California. In April '10 Merv and Judy announced that from July '10 their daughter Sandy Hallett would assume full ownership and control of Alkoomi, having been an integral part of the business for many years. She and husband Rod, together with daughters Laura, Emily and Molly, represent the second and third generations to be involved in this remarkably successful family business. Exports to all major markets.
