Kennedy & Wilson is a partnership between brothers James and Peter Wilson, and Juliana Kennedy. James, previously a chemical engineer, completed his master of oenology degree at Adelaide University in 2006, and is currently completing a PhD. Peter worked under Bailey Carrodus at Yarra Yering from 1986 to ’96, and established Kennedy & Wilson chocolates in ’96 before joining Stuart Wines as chief winemaker in 2003. Juliana, ex-CEO of a smartcard/ sim card company and the business mind behind the chocolate venture, now describes herself as ‘manager of the worldwide Kennedy & Wilson conglomerate’. A sense of humour in this business is an essential ingredient. The grapes come from the Quarry Ridge Vineyard in Kilmore at an elevation of 400 m on the southern side of the Great Dividing Range. The chardonnay and one of the pinot noir blocks are 20 years old, the balance of the vineyard was planted in 1998. The climate is very cool indeed, the hand-picked fruit ripens between April and May.
