The engagingly-named Smallfry Wines is the venture of Wayne Ahrens and partner Suzi Hilder. Wayne comes from a fifth-generation Barossa family, Suzi is the daughter of well- known Upper Hunter viticulturist Richard Hilder and wife Del, partners in Pyramid Hill Wines. Both have degrees from CSU, and both have extensive experience – Suzi as a senior viticulturist for Foster’s, and Wayne’s track record includes seven vintages as a cellar hand at Orlando Wyndham and other smaller Barossa wineries. They have a 10.7-ha vineyard in the Eden Valley (led by cabernet sauvignon and riesling), and a long-established 16.3-ha vineyard in the Vine Vale subregion of the Barossa Valley has no less than 16 varieties, led by shiraz, grenache, semillon, mourvedre, cabernet sauvignon and riesling. Most of the grapes are sold to other Barossa wineries, enough retained from each vineyard to meet Smallfry Wines’ needs.
