Steve and Cecilia Schubert are primarily grapegrowers, with 13 ha of shiraz and 1 ha of viognier. They purchased the 25-ha property in 1986, when it was in such a derelict state that there was no point trying to save the old vines. Both were working in other areas, so it was some years before they began replanting, at a little under 2 ha per year. Almost all the production is sold to Torbreck. In 2000 they decided to keep enough grapes to make a barrique of wine for their own (and friends') consumption. They were sufficiently encouraged by the outcome to venture into the dizzy heights of two hogsheads a year (since increased to four or so). The wine is made with wild yeast, open fermentation, basket pressing and bottling without filtration. Found the 2007 vintage difficult – as did most. Exports to the UK, the US, Canada, Germany and Hong Kong.

Schubert Estate
Schubert Estate (wines) was established in 2000 by Steve and Cecilia Schubert. Situated on Roennfeldt Road, Marananga the Schubert Estate is surrounded by vineyards producing the fine fruit used in flagship Barossa Valley wines made by internationally renowned wineries such as Torbreck, Greenock Creek, Two Hands and Penfolds.
From the initial 2000 vintage of one hogshead of wine the Schuberts have been encouraged to produce a little more each vintage – just enough to supply their mail orders and a limited amount for export and remaining to be one of Australia’s true small boutique or “garagist” wineries.
Schubert Estate’s flagship wine, Goose-yard Block Shiraz is a single vineyard wine and within each year’s Australian Wine Companion it has proven a consistency in quality - achieving a rating of 5 Glasses: 94 -100 . Outstanding. Wines of the highest quality, usually with a distinguished pedigree. (editions 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008). Other wines (also produced from the Goose-yard Block vineyard) and generally single-barrel wines (barrique - French Oak) are The Gosling; Future releases will be: The Lone Goose; and the Gander.
The wine is handcrafted, open fermentation, basket pressed, French-oak barrique maturation and bottling without filtration. Exports are mainly to the US and Canada.
