The history of Otway Estate dates back to 1983 when the first vines were planted by Stuart and Eileen Walker. The current group of six family and friends have expanded the scope of the business: the vineyard is planted primarily to chardonnay (3 ha) and pinot noir (1 ha) with small patches of riesling, semillon, sauvignon blanc and gewurztraminer. Current winemaker Matthew di Sciascio (who also makes the Bellbrae/Longboard wines) believes the climate is much cooler than the norm for Geelong, closer to parts of Tasmania. Thus the future direction will focus on sparkling wines, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines.
